Binance loses about $6.3bn in a hack attributed to North Korea

Attackers took about $6.3 billion from Binance on 30 October 2026. Around $3 billion has been frozen, much of it by Tether and Circle.

Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, lost about $6.3 billion in an attack on 30 October 2026. Investigators have attributed it to TraderTraitor, a hacking group linked to North Korea.

Fast freezes

Around $3 billion has been frozen. More than $2.3 billion of that was frozen by Tether and Circle, the issuers of USDT and USDC, who blocked wallets holding the stolen stablecoins.

Customers

Binance has said affected users will be covered.

Why it matters for scam victims

The freezes show what is possible when stolen funds are spotted quickly while still held in stablecoins. The same tools are open to individual victims through a police report and a well-evidenced freeze request.
